Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: An Introduction

Does it sometimes feel like you are continually talking about the same problems in the same way with clients, and that things don't seem to be getting better? That the client has become "defined" by the problem, and that they feel continuance of it is inevitable? SFBT offers a different approach.

SFBT “turns things upside down.”  Instead of focusing on the roots and pattern of the problem, it focuses on exceptions to it – periods of reduced substance use, more manageable mental health symptoms, getting on better in relationships. How were these achieved? These exceptions are discussed in detail to locate the seeds of solutions.

The course will cover:

  • Exploring SFBT’s key belief that prolonged ‘problem talk’ with clients mayl be unproductive
  • Empowering service users by focusing on when the problem isn’t there or has been less worrying – solution patterns
  • The techniques of SFBT, e.g. using ‘scaling questions’ to build and maintain progress, and asking the ‘miracle question’ to clarify goals
  • Deciding on SFBT’s usefulness to your own work through case studies and practice
