SFBT “turns things upside down.” Instead of focusing on the roots and pattern of the problem, it focuses on exceptions to it – periods of reduced substance use, more manageable mental health symptoms, getting on better in relationships. How were these achieved? These exceptions are discussed in detail as it will contain the seeds of the solution.
The course will cover:
- Exploring SFBT’s key belief that prolonged ‘problem talk’ with clients will be unproductive
- Empowering service users by focusing on when the problem isn’t there or has been less worrying – solution patterns
- The techniques of SFBT, e.g. using ‘scaling questions’ to build and maintain progress, and asking the ‘miracle question’ to clarify goals
- Deciding on SFBT’s usefulness to your own work through case studies and practice
