By the end of the course the participants will be able to :

  • Explain the meaning of the term “learning disability”; how learning disability differs from other disabilities; and why stereotyping is such an important issue
  • Describe the different types of learning disability, and some of the associated conditions; also the main causes of learning disability, and the different models of disability
  • Explain some of the specific issues that working with people with Autism or Asperger Syndrome this group involves
  • Demonstrate an awareness of good practice and the process of encouraging autonomy in working with this group
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of cohesive team-work in working with people with Learning Disabilities
  • Outline the characteristics of staff that are needed to work with this group
  • Demonstrate a variety of approaches in working with people with a range of Learning Disabilities
