You may not be a counsellor. You may be specifically told that you are not to adopt a counselling role in your job. But that doesn’t mean that most jobs in social care don’t involve the use of many of the skills that counsellors use. If we can sharpen these we can be more responsive to our clients.

This course makes participants very clear about the difference between being a counsellor and using counselling skills appropriately and effectively in their role.

Courses can be tailor-made from the following elements:

  • Understanding helping relationships: the difference between counselling and advising, influencing, looking after, etc.
  • The principles of the person centred approach and the role of empathy
  • The use of questions and the role of goal setting
  • The arts of active listening and self monitoring
  • Practising counselling skills in small groups
